Once known as the city state of Ragusa Dubrovnik was for many centuries one of the Mediterraneans principle mercantile cities. The landmarks and towering fortified walls built during its 15th and 16th century Golden age are still perfectly preserved today. Wealth from commerce may have ceased but it has been replaced by a highly lucrative tourist trade UNESCO World Heritage sites
