Yabusame mounted archery at Hachimangu shrine festival. Horseback archery has been a feature of the shrine s festival since the early days of the Kamakura period 1192-1333 and this rider wears a samurai costume of the thirteenth century. Yabusame is performed as an act of purity at Shinto shrines.
